New Sunrise Medical Imaging Center offers state-of-the-art technology and convenience

A 2004 article in The BBI Newsletter* claims that while the U.S. population is growing at a rate of 1% per year, the use of medical imaging procedures is growing at 4.5% per year. With diagnosis and treatment relying more and more on medical imaging, advanced technology and convenience in this area are critical.

Medical Imaging Northwest (MINW)—a leader in medical imaging for more than 60 years—has just opened the area’s first all-digital imaging center at Sunrise Medical Campus on South Hill, Puyallup. All-digital means that a full spectrum of radiologic procedures, including ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and bone densitometry among others, are performed and reported without the use of film. For patients and physicians, this state-of-the-art technology makes getting results faster and easier than ever.

According to Barbara Blankenship, M.D., radiologist and medical director of the new center, “Images are available near-instantaneously and can be viewed in multiple places at the same time.” With film, only one hard-copy of an image is available so it may take hours or days before all parties are able to view it.

Additionally, patients now have the option of having their procedures done at MINW’s Puyallup Imaging Center near Good Samaritan Hospital, or the new Sunrise Imaging Center. “Both locations have access to all patient images regardless of which center they were taken,” said Sunrise Imaging Center manager David Hulse. “So whichever location is more convenient for the patient is where we’d like them to go.”

Blankenship added that with MINW offering a complete range of the most advanced technology available, bolstered by the expertise of 19 radiologists, there is no need for East Pierce County residents to travel outside the area to receive the best radiological care. “We can meet all their radiology needs under one roof, which means patients will get answers back more quickly,” she said.

In addition to the Sunrise and Puyallup Imaging Centers, MINW provides diagnostic and interventional services at Allenmore, St. Clare and Good Samaritan hospitals, and for Multicare clinics in South King and Pierce Counties.

To make an appointment or tour the new all-digital Sunrise Imaging Center at 11212 Sunrise Boulevard East in Puyallup, please call 253-841-4353.

THE FAT LOSS COACH
Speaks Out

EXERCISE and LOW CARB DIET'S
Make Poor Partners

Over the last twenty five years the most common questioned asked me by frustrated exercisers, has been what exercise routine will get me the body I desire? My answer is always the same. They need to start exercising better judgement and learn that exercise alone will not solve their body composition problem. I believe the number one reason for starting an exercise program is weight reduction, even before fitness and health concerns. Exercise by itself is a poor weight manager and it increases the need for better nutritional requirements. I believe I would receive very little disagreement that a combination of nutrition and exercise is the answer to improvement in weight loss ( fat loss ), fitness and health risk concerns. With obesity reaching epidemic rates and the drop out rate of most health clubs' remaining high this article intent is to lay the foundation why exercise and low carbohydrate diet's are poor partners.READ MORE

SPRING CLEANING OUR BODIES
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbalist and Reiki Practitioner, Eatonville's Wellness Center, (360)832-2167

Just as we clean our houses and yards, spring is also the best time to do any "cleaning" of our bodies. In some cultures the winter diet is dried or preserved foods. Thus in spring, people would detoxify themselves by fasting, cleansing diets, or sweats.READ MORE

OUR CHILDREN'S HEALTH
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,

Our poor health habits and degraded food has left us with a generation suffering from what experts are calling the "chronic subclinical everything syndrome." I've seen some of these children lately in my practice. Their health problems possibly started even before they were born, when their parents' health was compromised during and after conception. SHORING UP OUR BODILY DEFENSES
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,
Eatonville's Wellness Center, (360)832-2167

Why is it that some people get sick while others don't even when they're exposed at the same time? One definate factor is the condition of each individual's immune system. Our immune system is perfectly designed to safeguard us from possible infection and disease. If it's working, we rarely get sick or when we do, we recover quickly. If it's not working, we get repeated infections (colds, sinus infections, flus, etc.), may have rampant allergies, or could have autoimmune disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and others. CAN YOU GROW HEALTHIER AS YOU GROW OLDER?
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,

An eastern Indian colleague of mine recently told me she notices a marked difference in the way older people are in America versus her home in Sri Lanka. Here she sees seniors with the vitality gone from their eyes. Where she is from, they are still excited about life even as they approach death. READ MORE

WHAT IS REIKI?
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,
Eatonville's Wellness Center, (360)832-2167

Reiki (pronounced ra ke) is a form of natural healing that dates back to ancient times and was revived in 19th century Japan. Reiki means "universal life energy" in Japanese. The healthy human body is composed of a dynamic energy system. A full session of reiki will help balance the energy system of the body, the endocrine glands (which are necessary for the proper functioning of the body as well as the body's ability to handle and adapt to stress), and the internal organs. Reiki can also help alleviate pain, physical trauma, post-surgical wounds, and acute and chronic conditions, such as arthritis. READ MORE

THE WEIGHT GAIN GAME
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,
Eatonville's Wellness Center, (360)832-2167

At least 1/3 of all Americans are classified as overweight (a 32 percent increase in only 15 years). That number increases each year, especially with children. Being overweight is the 2nd leading cause of cancer (behind smoking) in this country. A person 40 to 50 lbs over their ideal body weight has a 700% higher chance of developing high blood pressure, and a 3000% higher chance of developing diabetes! READ MORE

TO DETOXIFY OR NOT TO DETOXIFY?
by Catharine Walkinshaw, Herbal Consultant and Reiki Practitioner,
Eatonville's Wellness Center, (360)832-2167

Our body has the amazing ability to run efficiently if we give it what it needs and don't give it what it doesn't need. Americans are notorious for giving bodies too much of what they don't need . . . toxins from our foods, our lifestyle, and our environment. Usually our body's detoxification systems (the liver, skin, bowels, and kidneys) do a good job of cleaning all this "stuff" out. However, if we overload with too many toxins, the body's systems fail (any filtering system fails when too much is put in). READ MORE

Growing Healthy . . .Naturally
by Catharine Walkinshaw

2000BC: Here eat this root
1000AD: That root is heathen. Here, say this prayer.
1850AD: That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.
1940AD: That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.
1985AD: That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.
2000AD: That antibiotic doesn't work anymore. Here, eat this root.

What goes around, comes around. In today's era of health-consciousness and increasing medical costs and devastating diseases, natural healing and alternative therapies have become in vogue. Last year alone, over 40% of health care funds were spent on some form of alternative or natural healing. So what is natural healing and how can it help? READ MORE

Note from Catharine Walkinshaw, Eatonville: Barbara Kingsolver is one of my most favorite authors. She wrote The Bean Trees, Pigs in Heaven and Animal Dreams. She also wrote the Poisonwood Bible, a very in depth and interesting look at missionary work in Africa. She strikes me as compassionate, thoughtful, a visionary, and a very wise teacher. Her words follow and give us something to ponder about. It's obvious from all the signs (power shortages, weather changes, the stock market, etc.), that we are in a period of immense change. The earth is shifting and we are with her. Let's work together to make it a positive shift for all of life, all of creation, and all of the universe.

Open Letter from Barbara Kingsolver
Okay, I'll admit it, I spent the inaugural weekend in denial. (He's not my president. Most of us didn't actually vote for the guy ) Ignored the smarmy front-page photos of parades and balls, skipped straight to Section B to look for coverage of the protests. But the fact is, we now have a new administration that's hostile to the things I love most: human kindness, the dignity of diversity, and the wild glory of life on earth. READ MORE
