These comments were offered by Mark, of Eatonville: Baseball is a wet sport when you live in Eatonville, so when you think about playing baseball
I don't want to hear you cry because it is raining. Around Eatonville
the rain is your friend when you play baseball. And remember
Well kids (I use the term affectionately) I guess it's time to do it again. The response to this page has been nothing short of phenomenal! Okay, scratch phenomenal; the whole thing reminds me of what the cowboy said when they told him they were not going to hang him for stealing horses, "No noose is good noose". Seems like the kind of music I offered that should stir your deepest sentiments is discarded out of hand in favor of rap-crap. When you're somewhat older the smarter ones among you will wonder why? Most of those who still shake and rattle in front of a 120 db radio in their car will probably wonder how and when the world passed them by. A few weeks ago I needed to visit EHS but didn't arrive until afternoon when school was letting out. The departing students had to flow around a couple (in this case a boy and a girl) who were standing in the middle of the sidewalk in close embrace. The students didn't seem to be paying any attention to them, except as an obstacle, but to the couple perhaps they felt they were making some kind of statement. The school office suggested I take care navigating my way to the library through the boisterous and animated crowd. Finishing at the library, I heard my name called by a girl student. She had previously been known to me when I was running the computer lab at an elementary school in the Bethel district. She will be graduating from EHS this year. Fergie plans to be there.
Is it really true that kids think they get zits from leaning over the french-fry vat at McDonald's? And further, that kids no longer have any interest in working at McDonald's in the first place? But why? I 'd like to know your reasons. It used to be as soon as you were 16 you went to Macs for your first job and your first paycheck so you could save up for your first car. So what's changed? Do you think phonics is good? It may help with your reading but what does it do for your spelling? I see "to" and "too" mixed up frequently and "your" and "you're" the same way.
Do any of you, any of you at all, like history? And do they still teach it in school? There are well over a hundred countries in the world and just reading very short, conversational descriptions of them is very illuminating. No need to memorize dates or things like that but only retain a mental image of how the country functions and what its people are like. You say to yourself, "Would I like to live there?" That's the acid test. Do you think you are learning things? Do you feel superior in the sense that you know more today than you did yesterday? Or that you've gotten the hang of something that was difficult in math? You should! One of the other things I enjoyed doing at Bethel was to be monitor of an in-school-suspension class in a junior high school. "Why are you here?", I would ask the kids. "Let me help you." I helped them with all sorts of class work until they would ask me, when it was time to go, "Are you going to be here tomorrow?" To me, that was a fine, fine compliment. Of course that got around to the teachers and one of them asked me specially to help a very good math student who was hung up on a particular algebra problem. We both did it separately and then looked in the back of the book for the answer. His answer was incorrect but mine was right. When I went through the problem explaining my rationale so that he could understand it and work the problem the way the teacher required, his face lit up. "I get it!", he said as he closed his book and left with a big smile. OK, can you tell me what things you like best? I dare ya! Stay happy. Comments to Fergie
