Response to Bush Isn't Pro Life

Soon I hope to visit your town to do some business but first I decided to check it out online beforehand. Anyway, I read an article that agreed with in part, however mostly I disagreed.

First of all, I agree that a balanced, or more properly defined pro-life statement would include life for all at all times. However, I believe that one seriously needs to take into account whether something "alive" is really living or is indeed dying. Life and death, living and dying to some may start with conception and end with a soul- and spirit- less corpse, but life and death are also products of our tongue (meaning our words and the attitudes we use to communicate them). Our words either encourage, instruct, enlighten and repair broken hearts, or they discourage, offend, wound and cause bitterness. If you really are a Christian, then I recommend you pray for your president rather than put him down and put yourself and your ideas up.

Also, in a legal sense, humanity's need for justice as a means of promoting life by punishing offenders (whether individuals or nations) and thereby attempting to deter them and others like them is not only necessary and legal but also right in situations where other lives are at stake and especially where other's lives have already been lost due to unrepented hatred and arrogance on the part of the offender. In short, some people DO deserve to die, and sometimes it may be necessary for a few good lives to be lost in order that a whole lot of good people can be protected or even saved. Humans and H-bombs aren't always without error, though, I agree. Nonetheless, even God in the Bible commanded the destruction of individual sinners and entire sinning nations.

In the case of abortions, however, there's much to be said that I couldn't possibly cover in a short essay. Nevertheless, I think a guiding principle should be as you say, the love for "all life" (mother and baby). In my book, I take that to include taking responsability for our actions even when we hadn't planned or weren't wanting to get what we got. Potentially life- threatening situations would of course be reason to take more drastic means but would not be considered punishment since the element of motive would not be an issue.

Lastly, on the subject of healthcare, I think I'll close by saying that I don't believe that as individuals we are financially "responsible" for the life of our neighbors to the extent that they should be guaranteed health care "at all costs". Yes, we are our 'brother's keeper', but please keep in mind all the illegal residents that get government medical coupons (funded by my tax dollars) while I am not even able to afford health insurance for my own family. Health care should really begin at the personal level where each individual is accountable for his/her own life and immediate family, after that then we should then of course strive to meet the needs of those in our world around us. First we are our "brother's keeper" then we can be our "neighbor's keeper".
